Growing up in the orphanage, he was denied any chance of it when he was young. No one to hold him when he was frightened, no one to soothe him when he was hurt. He faced horrors no child should have to, and essentially he faced them alone.

Some part of him always craved it; he envied the children he saw leave the orphanage with families who wanted a child to love so badly they would take one of the abandoned wretches as their own. But he survived his hardships alone, growing stronger both physically and mentally -- and magically, too, once he learned he was a wizard -- and convinced himself that he had no need for it.

Love, he decided, was a weakness. An emotion that made one soft; distracted people from their studies; left one needing someone else to help in cases of injury or sickness. Without love, he was strong, relying on only himself, because after all, he was the only one who he could trust to never betray or abandon him.

When his classmates were growing more interested in boy and girl friends, starting to pay more attention to dances and dating than their studies, he shook his head and laughed at them. There was no need to spend so much time and energy in finding someone who would only leave them for someone else later. Like any teenage boy, he had needs, and he had many ways to satisfy them without wasting his time and energy over the whole foolish romance aspect. Sex was sex, pleasure was pleasure, and when he was sated, he simply returned to his studies without any ties to bind him.

And then it happened. In the midst of charming his diary to prepare it for its eventual purpose, he felt a stinging, burning sensation. It was as if someone had scattered burning embers on his skin, and he knew it had come from the diary because he saw the page singe in places before returning to normal. Was there someone there, already in the diary? What was going on?

He wrote on the page, willing the words to flow through to whoever had scattered hot ashes on it. "Ouch!"

And someone wrote back...

He and Blaise rapidly became friends, something telling him he could trust this boy from the future where he could trust no other. He learned their pleasures and needs seemed to match, he told Blaise things he had never told anyone else, and he slowly realized that he needed and wanted Blaise's friendship far more than he had ever believed he could need anyone. Through stolen time-turners and dark magic, he met his friend, and for the first time in his life, Tom Riddle fell hopelessly in love.

It was both exhilarating and terrifying, and he knew he could never do without it. And then Blaise graduated, and came to be with him, and everything Tom had believed about love, growing up, was proved to be a lie. It wasn't a weakness, it was a strength. Having someone there to care for him, to protect him, to need his care and protection in return -- it made him stronger than he had ever been on his own. Together, there was nothing they couldn't do. He had finally learned the secrets of love.
